From wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulatto

Mulatto is no longer commonly used in the United States. Some who prefer terms such as bi-racial, may consider it offensive. [15] It existed as an official census category until 1930[citation needed]. In the south of the country, mulattos inherited slave status if their mothers were slaves. As for free mulattos, in Spanish and French-influenced areas of the South prior to the Civil War (particularly New Orleans, Louisiana), a number of mulattos were free and slave-owning.[16] Although it is commonly used to describe individuals of mixed European and African descent, it originally referred to anyone with mixed ethnicities; in fact, in the United States, "mulatto" was also used as a term for those of mixed white and Native American ancestry during the early census years.[15][17][18][19] Mulatto was also used interchangeably with terms like "turk", leading to further ambiguity when referring to many North Africans and Middle Easterners.[20]

I've used it myself, yes. But if someone were to tell me that it was an offensive term I would probably stop. I had never before heard that anyone found it offensive.

Amen. Hard to believe he lives near the nation's capital.

I don't *really* care if he uses it or not. If he uses it, he will be simply revealing himself to others, and there is nothing wrong with that. People ought to know where other people stand.

Just like Rocky's personals ad. I don't mind if it actually has the truth, not something dolled up and fake.

I have never known anyone who reads more into what others say (or post) than you. He said himself he'd used and didn't realize it was offensive. Yet you choose to believe he is "revealing" his racism. Isn't it possible he is telling the truth?

This is apt. FM distinguishes being ignorant and being guileful, believing the former condition to be exculpatory of even racism. I'm not sure there is a difference in terms of moral significance after the mid-twentieth century, particularly in the 21st century. But I understand this is a favored rationalization of LDS apologists.

Ironically, this very distinction came up once when I was discussing FM by PM with another CGer.
