Default I taught Elders Quorum today

The lesson was on Elder Wirthlin's "Concern for the One" talk (ironically, the same topic as my wife's sac. meeting talk a month or so ago).

I started out with a discussion about tolerance. I had a bunch of quotes on the subject that I passed out but didn't give who said them - hoping to get people to think about the subject without pre-judging whether they agree or disagree.

The first quote was by Mother Theresa: "If you judge people, you have no time to love them." I asked if anyone had any thoughts. One of the guys raised his hand and said, "Yeah, I completely disagree with that quote." I started to laugh at the joke, but he wasn't joking, so I stifled it really quickly. He started talking about how we have to make judgments about people and who we associate with.

He's a good guy, and I like him a lot as a friend, but man, is he opinionated.

Funny - the three quotes that the consensus thought were most consistent with LDS teachings were by Mother Theresa, Jesse Jackson, and the one by Elder Wirthlin in the subject talk. Very interesting.

I like that approach. I use it myself sometimes. It's fun to get people to think about ideas without prejudging based on the messenger.

Judgment allowed my wife and I to decline an invitation for our daughter to stay overnight at a newer member's home. A couple of weeks later, that couple was arrested for child abuse and neglect and lost custody of the girl my daughter would have come over to play with.

However, as their home teacher, I continued to visit with them and try to help there where I could.
