Question about "raising the bar". . .
There was a thrread on CougarBoard last night that discussed "raising the bar" for missionary service. A few people made the comment that raising the bar meant that some missionaries would have to wait another year before leaving on their missions. My understanding was that since the bar was raised kids who had committed certain trangressions were pretty much exempt from missionary service, regardless of how long they waited. Which is it?

....
even the most 'vile' of sinners is being allowed to serve. i say this because i know of a kid who humped girls non-stop, was a drug addict, and is currently in his 6th month of service. his case was taken to the area authorities and he had to wait almost a year and a half but is currently serving.
i think it just takes a lot longer, they have to jump more hoops and certain kids are disqualifying themselves. |

I imagine some don't want to wait
so they disqualify themselves.

From what I have heard....
You can still serve if you have done... Drugs Alcohol Tobacco Sex It just takes time.... Parenting a child is an auto disqualification now. Where before if you gave up the child, or the child was given up and you went through the repentence process you could still serve. Not anymore.

Isn't
the only form of sex allowed, heterosexual?
I thought homosexual sex is an auto disqualifier? Murder is also a disqualifier, as it obviously should be.

Reason for raising the bar
They're raising the bar because of the simple law of suppy and demand. Now they have more modest growth expectations, so they need fewer missionaries, but the population of active Mormons continues to grow due to high birth rates, so they're being more selective. In addition to my explanation for the declinine growth rate stated here the other day, the Church is now more circumspect about growth for the mere sake of growth. Back when, in many poor countries published growth rates were stupendous, but retention rate was way under 5%.

I don't know about the speed of growth....
But I am about ready to be the crap out of the missionaries we have in our ward.
For the last month they have been coming into PEC/Ward Corr. and telling us that we aren't doing our job and finding enough people for them to teach. In the last month they have found only 1 person themselves. So, if you are keeping score... them 1, us 0. I am about to "raise a bar" alright...

Member missionary work isn't very lively
right now, even though our WML is doing a great job.
Have to admit, finding people to teach is somewhat difficult once you've already bugged your few friends who might want to listen.
