I agree with you. This guy just seemed like he was on his way to becoming an internet legend.
The fact that he's a sprinter at his size is very good - I'm sure he's still got great football speed. I trust Bronco and his staff, as well. And I'm excited about this recruit, as well. Just not to the point of climaxing, as I would be if he really did have borderline World-class speed.

something's wrong with that 12.04. Most high schools wouldn't have a sprinter who only ran that.

For some perspective...
I ran a 11 flat accutrack. The fastest I ever ran with a hand-held was 10.8. In one race I ran an 11.0 handheld and lost by about .5-1 step to a kid who ran a 10.58 handheld. I am sure that there are small schools throughout the US, that rarely if ever run at meets with accutrack timing, with school records that are .4-.6 seconds faster than reality. The school record here at Rockland High in 100 mtr is 10.8 by a kid who got 7th place in Idaho 1-A 100 mtr at State. I doubt it was a bumper crop that year for the fym from such speed farms as Ririe, Hagerman, Rockland, Dubois, Carey and Bancroft. I will bet his accutrack time at state was close to 11.6. The point is that some handheld times could be up to a full second off reality.
As for 40's, I think I ran about a 4.6. Now I was faster than quicker, and with Jerry being 6'3" and roughly 225 lbs, I am willing bet so is he. So his 40 is probably a lot more similar to Johnny Harline than Luke Staley. His teams 4x100 relay time was not too impressive either. A good 4x100 relay time is under 43 seconds. I am sure the kid is fast for a big guy, but his speed is looking more like good TE or DE speed than good runningback speed. Regardless, I am sure he is a great player and will be a great addition to the Y football team. I also am willing to bet that his real 40/100 mtr time is likely 4.85/11.7 when all the dust settles and for a 17 year old kid that is that big, that is actually very, very good. Just not Luke Staleylike.

Best time not 10.6
I spoke to Jerry. His best 100 time is 10.9.

I hope that's true, because that's still very impressive for a guy that big. Like I said, all I was trying to do was to verify the 10.6, and the only time I could find was the 12.07.

And if the 10.9 is hand-timed, then an Accutrak time of 11.5 sounds believable for a big guy.

I find it hard to believe there is THAT large of a discrepancy in the same track year. One meet a 12.04 and in another meet a 10.9? doesn't make sense..
