Because I used to think the same thing you do about paintings of Jesus. In fact, there's a thread lying around here somewhere where I make an argument that the image that we have of Jesus is little more than an ideological descendant of the image of Zeus. I still believe it, too.

Once I was done patting myself on the back for being so much smarter than everybody else, I stopped worrying about pointing out a problem of which all are already aware. When making paintings of Christ, artists do not attempt to portray His physical features; they rather attempt to portray on canvas how they feel about Christ. I don't resist your line of thinking because it's wrong; I resist it because I feel it belittles an expression of the object of one's worship.

For the record, I'm not particularly attached to this painting. I'm not terribly enthused about depictions of the Savior that diminish His significance and majesty in an effort to make Him more approachable and personable. It's the same reason I wince every time somebody calls him our "big brother." I know that some of the brethren feel the same way, incidentally. But that's why I don't buy the picture. I don't begrudge him the right to paint them.

I agree with all of that. I was simply adding a little humor to the conversation while attempting to understand why he would feel the need to show him holding hands with a black girl. Had I not been met with resistance it wouldn't have been an issue.

If nothing else, Olsen understands mass marketing.

And my, that's an awfully big stick Jesus is carrying around.

It figures that a humorless person wouldn't recognize humor. Nice censorship implication too, jackass.

Profanity is a feeble attempt by a weak mind to express itself forcibly.

You are not only dull yourself, you appear to cause dullness in others.

Carry on zoot.

Thanks for the trite and obviously wrong quote. Also, I don't think you know what "zoot" means.
