What is the policy on non members
joining LDS scout troops? Our oldest recently turned 8 and we want to start him in Cub Scouts. Does our son need to be a baptized member to join the local LDS pack?

Don't quote me, but I don't think so.

Definitely not required. In fact they will beg you to have your son active in scouts so they can try to activate him on Sundays and/or baptize him. I'm in YM and this is a trick I'm currently employing. |

There are 3 non-members in our branch's scout troop.

It is fine for non-members to be in a LDS pack/troop.

No. We have a boy scout in my 11 yr old scout patrol that is not LDS. His father is essentially an assistant scoutmaster, although not officially. In fact, the three wards meeting in our building all combined their 11 yr old scout patrols to increase numbers, but each ward has an 11 yr old scout leader. The non-LDS father and I do 80% of the work, the called scout leaders from the other two wards don't even show up half the time. So I'm glad to have him, and he's a fantastic guy to boot. I've had a handful of religious conversations with him, and if he seems interested (not really so far), I'll certainly talk to him more, but I definitely err on the side of not being too pushy about it.

However, you should realize that there will be a religious and LDS framework to scouts if you put him in an LDS-sponsored pack - opening and closing prayers and so forth.

Before I joined the Church, I was in a Mormon scout troop. It was awesome...
Nobody ever wore their uniform. You were able to leave the campouts on Saturday night. Everyone's mom did their merit badges and Eagle projects for them. As a result, people were getting their Eagles when they were 14.

If you call the local scout office you can find a scout pack or troop that is in your area that is affiliated with a school or <gasp> another church. Such troops have leaders that actually volunteered, they're willing to spend an entire weekend on a camp out, etc.
