Tex is right. Doctors should not be discussing politics in this context.

I support stem cell research 100% and that could be one small benefit of an Obama presidency, I suppose. There are a lot of stem cell studies pertaining to heart failure and heart attacks. But I could never imagine myself saying to a patient, "You know, if it weren't for George Bush we would be able to do a lot more for your congestive heart failure. We've lost eight years."

For one thing, it's not true. For another thing, it's not productive and displays an attitude of hopelessness. You need to focus on the things that we CAN do for the disease rather than the things that could possibly be on the horizon.

To get back to the original post, is an insulin pump an option in such a small child? That's the option I would think about. Insulin pumps obviously aren't as good as a new pancreas, but they're the closest thing we have right now until pancreas transplants get a little bit better.
