a few thoughts/rants

The only rock band on the Billboard top 20 is Nickelback, one of the worst bands of all time.

Apparently John Mayer is considered a guitar hero. I don't know whether to laugh or puke when I hear that. Eddie Van Halen and Angus Young are guitar heroes, not some wuss who sings about your body being a wonderland. I'll admit, he is talented, but guitar HERO? Please.

No good riffs in rock music today.

No one solos anymore, and the ones that do suck. I came across Skid Row's I Remember You video on youtube - I forgot how good of a guitar solo that was. And it wasn't just hair metal or hard rock, the Seattle bands had some kick ass solos too. But it all just stopped around 10 years ago.

I would be worried about opening myself to ridicule with the next statement, but let's not kid ourselves.

I like Nickleback. I even own two of their CDs.

Venkman, you seem like a reasonable guy. Could you explain exactly how Nickleback is "one of the worst bands of all time"? I've heard this sentiment from quite a few people and I've never really understood how that works. Isn't musical taste subjective?

You should try Pumpkin Tree instead. Nickleback is not real guitar rock.

What's up with the spilt milk? is that a knock-off of the REM video?

By the way, I must commend your salute to Skid Row. Personally, I can't comment on the subject because when I do turn on the radio (which is rarely) all I hear are rappers covering songs from the 80s and butchering them. Well, some are already covering/sampling/stealing 90s songs, too.

You do open yourself up to ridicule and I'm sure there are some who would ridicule me for praising a hair metal ballad in my original post.

They're a cheap imitation of Creed, another sucky band who themselves were a cheap imitation of "grunge".

I'm sure if you googled Nickelback sucks you'd find some better explanations. Of course musical taste is subjective and I won't ridicule your tastes. I just despise their music. But they're one of the few succesful mainstream rock bands (along with the horrific Daughtry) so maybe people will take any hard rock they can get.

I feel your pain, Venkman. Good post. And yes, Nickelback sucks.

But don't lose hope. Guitar rock is not dead. It's just not played on AM/FM anymore. You need to invest in satellite radio. And you have to hunt a little. Much of what we used to call rock is now called "alternative country".

Agreed. My wife likes Nickelback, and I just can't stand them. They are wannabes. They are like the rock stars who act hard because it'll get them girls.

I tried to give Nickelback a chance for my wife. I just can't stand them. They suck. They blow. Awful.
