FWIW, I have not had the impression that it contains special powers or has special spiritual utility.

However the scriptures teach us to seek for spiritual gifts. So who knows where inspiration may come from.

Maybe the stones and such were more important to Joseph as talismans of power and protection. i.e. their main purpose was to be in his pocket and make him feel more secure.
