Looks like conservative commentator Paul Mirengoff feels the same way.

To the extent that a skewed caucus process in one state can produce a loser, last night that loser was mainstream conservatism. That's because the only two major Republican candidates who take mainstream conservative positions across-the-board both fell short of expectations.

Meaning Romney and Thompson. I find that I'm really missing guys like George Allen and Rick Santorum this morning. Perhaps the real story of 2006 is not the retake of the House and Senate by the Dems, but the taking out at the knees several strong conservative Presidential candidates.

??? There isn't exactly a history of liberals in primaries being racist. In general, those issues arise in the general election among conservatives.

It isn't that I can't believe they voted for a black man in Iowa. I can believe it. And that is why it is historic. The climate has changed, and Obama is evidence of it.
