Default What's your take on this guy's question?

http://texags.com/main/forum.reply.a...00&forum_id=15

I am having a jay santos moment, in that I am having trouble understanding how disfellowship would be useful in a majority of such cases (and I think many if not a majority of Bishops would disfellowship such a member, i.e. have a probationary period).

Based on such a hypothetical, I'd say your response was about as good as anybody's.

It might be worthwhile to point out that church discipline is not the same as forgiveness. Being under discipline doesn't make you "unforgiven" and then the moment you are re-fellowshipped, you become "forgiven."

Up until maybe 5-10 years ago, such a person probably would have been excommunicated. Now, I think he would certainly be disfellowshipped. That's a trend in a positive direction. I'm more strongly against excommunication and less strongly against disfellowshipping and the whole court system in general.

Due to my personal experiences over the past few years I'd love to give my take on this, but not sure it would be appropriate in a public forum like this.

For the most part I agree with you and Jay.

i don't see it as useful and would hope compassion and working with him would be the course followed, but I'm glad I don't and won't have to deal with it.

Some day, your quest for a complete absence of consequences for your actions will be realized. Until that time, keep fighting the good fight.

Dumbasses.

The consequences for guy in this hypothetical involve:

--loss of wife and family
--pain he's caused his kids that will likely lead to long-term psychological issues
--possible addiction to alcohol and drugs
--messing up his view of sex and ability to have healthy sex life with a spouse
--possible STD's
--loss of his career
--possible legal consequences
--financial ruin, furthering the hardships to his wife and kids which he will be aware of for lifetime
--damage to self esteem and worth
--damage to relationship with God
--lack of confidence in himself to be able to make his life right
--loss of friends and a very lonely existence
--ton of grief and pain

I couldn't and wouldn't remove these consequences of sin from this man. This guy's gonna have a helluva time repenting and bringing himself to God. The church should do everything possible to help this man repent. I don't think the church should do anything to add to this pain or the pain of his family (which excommunication and church courts frequently do).
