Default What Waters has been trying to say

We all know intuitively that God's ways are counterintuitive, largely unjust by our standards, even strange and arcane if not occult. How could they not be? Just look at the history of our planet and its present make up. (This is one of the recurring themes in Cormac McCarthy's works that draws me to them.) Thus, perversely, because we all intuitively know this, the LDS Church's very strangeness and even its more malign aspects have worked to some extent in its favor. (Like all really bright people Waters is a contradiction; he simultaneously condemns and defends the malign and the strange.) Therefore the creeping banality and mainstreaming that has nearly overtaken the LDS Church would put it to death.

The mainstreaming of the church has been minimal.

Not from the Fundy perspective.

(Quick personal yarn - We once got rained out at a youth baseball tourney in St. George, so I decided to take the wife & check out Hilldale / Colorado City, you know, a tourist jaunt, say-you've-been-there deal. It was all I thought it would be, maybe just a bit more surreal. On the way back to civilization I told wifey about the Fundy view of blacks. Boy she was pissed at me for that little trip.)

Lol. This is like the GEICO commercial. SU tells us what Waters really means.

Substantively though, I agree with most of that.

Depends on perspective. From the perspective of the world, no.
