Default Moment of silence before a talk...

My nephew had his farewell yesterday (Pleasant View) so we headed to Utah for the day. Any way the speaker after my nephew asks for 15 seconds of silence before his talk so that we can pray for him and that we will get something out of the talk. He processed to give a good but little unusual talk about husband and wife relationships. I was just thinking to myself the whole talk that this guy would enjoy the religion section on cougarguard.

Quite smart. If you didn't get anything out of his talk, it is your fault.

That is a brilliant strategy. Asking for a moment (or moments) of silence counts toward the number of minutes you've been asked to speak.

I wonder if the kid's mom and dad would have given more inspiring talks?

He should have done the "aloha" routine. That's more fun and takes up just as much time.

speaking of which we had a highly interactive young adult speaker last Sunday.

She gave a lot of instructions "Husbands, I want you to turn around and look at your wives in the eye and tell them you love them." etc. She had the women do the same thing. She said "you're not doing it, I really want you to do it."

It was like being at an interactive Oprah conference, which was cool, given t hat it was different. Very different.

Aha... A peer-pressure induced "I love you". That's gotta be sincere.

once in a while you get a good-natured person who gets up on the stand and tells everyone to lighten up and laugh a little bit.

It's a welcome respite sometimes from all the seriousness and guilt-trips.

That reminds me of an EQ lesson I had a few years ago in a Provo family ward. The quorum sat around in a circle and the instructor had us go around and name what quality originally attracted us to our wife. One guy, a hilariously quirky UC-Berkeley educated attorney, told us that he thought his wife was a lesbian because she wouldn't kiss him on the first date and it turned him on. I've never laughed so hard in church.
