I just heard that the media waited until all the election news died before breaking the polygamy story. I can't figure out why the media cares that much.

I guess the idea is that the church "admitting" that JS had 40 wives is the news angle.

So here's a question: is there any official LDS material in the past 20 years that has discussed JS's 40 wives? Past 50 years? I have no idea.

This article says that JS fathered two other children beside's Emma's.

Who were they?

I'm kinda fuzzy, but my memory is that there is no definitive proof that there was even a single child. That there was one that was thought to be his almost certainly, but DNA was not a match.
