Default Polygamy: Embrace Without Practicing

Wilford Woodruff Diary, Sep. 24, 1871:

"President Young spoke 58 minutes. He said a man may embrace the Law of Celestial Marriage in his heart and not take the second wife and be justified before the Lord."

Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 11: 268, 269:

"It is the word of the Lord, and I wish to say to you, and all the world, that if you desire with all your hearts to obtain the blessings which Abraham obtained, you will be polygamists at least in your faith, or you will come short of enjoying the salvation and the glory which Abraham has obtained."

SIEQ, question for you on quotes like this you find in JoD.

My opinion is that very few of these are of much value to us, doctrinally. I would guess that you generally agree. You may believe they have value, historically, but that's a different issue.

Do you believe this quote could have doctrinal significance? Or are you quoting it to show a historical significance pertaining to BY's belief set?

Upon further reflection, I'm not sure if these quotes apply to members in this day and age, or just to those members back then when polygamy was practiced but weren't currently being asked to participate.

They have value to me in that I'm interested in the breadth and development of LDS thought generally. Their doctrinal significance at the moment is minimal, but if polygamy were reinstituted, they could suddenly be all too relevant.

I agree.

I believe polygamy has a 0.00001% chance to be reinstituted. Like Michael Jordan you have to leave the 1% but I'm going to downgrade it.

Polygamy is a deal breaker for me. If polygamy was reinstituted, I'd start taking my tithing dollars elsewhere... Probably to one of those really big Southern churches I'll surely find in Mississippi that offers free coffee and donuts and rock 'n' roll sermons.

Plus you get to wear sandals and jeans! No polygamy though, AFAIK.

Amen. I suppose if I had an angel with a shiny new sword standing over me saying, "Embrace or go to hell" I might have to reconsider. Anything short of that, and I think I might just apostasize.

Interesting quote. There have been several times that I have "embraced the Law of Celestial Marriage in my heart". But then my wife catches me staring and slaps me upside the head.
