Optimal range for a handgun is about 20 yards as they are intended for close proximity usage. However, you are not calculating the extra rifling in a rifle versus the minor length of rifling in the barrel of a pistol or revolver. I wouldn't choose a handgun as my weapon of choice if I knew I were shooting at 25, 50 or 75 yards. Would you?

What are the distances in gun ranges? I haven't really thought about that as I don't really frequent them.

what did you say? aim up and right if you are at 25 yards?

Remember young rabbit, enthusiasm without wisdom is folly. When the serpent speaks, the rabbit always listens. When the birds speak, the rabbit does not hear. He that can hear, let him hear.

Why listen to snakes, rabbits, and birds when I can shoot them at greater than 25 yards?

At 25 yards, it is difficult to see the holes in paper targets. Hence spotting scopes. For me, a relatively poor shooter, hitting the target consistently at 25 yards takes patience and proper technique (i.e. proper grip, trigger pull, breathing, stance) and I carefully fire each round. In a gun fight, I would not be shooting like that of course. I wouldn't find much utility in target shooting with a pistol at more than 25 yards.

Which always makes me laugh, when I see extended barrels, scopes and tripods for pistols. Just get a damn rifle.

Do you know what a spotting scope is? It is not attached to the pistol in anyway. It is used to look at the target when you are not shooting.

They sold those at Cabela's. We were also told to try out camo netting if we wanted to try target shooting while prone. It was supposed to add realism, as if we were hunting and trying to hide ourselves.

We passed on the camo netting.

I've used my spotting scope for all sorts of things. It was great fun to watch wolves with it at Yellowstone. I've taken pictures through it with a camera. I have used it in lieu of binoculars. Bird-watching. Star-gazing. Moon-gazing. Peeping tom. (just kidding).

I'm not talking about a spotting scopes but a pistol with a scope for shooting. You've probably seen those at gun shows.
