Some of the best photos I've ever taken were on my mission. Everything is on slides. What would be the best way to transfer them to be able to post them online? Any ideas?

I'm also looking to get a new digital camera. As the resident site photographer, what would you suggest, Mike?

BTW, I like those pics.

I know there is such thing as machines where you insert slides and they create a digital file. I'm sure there is an online service that would do it. Although you would have to cross your fingers that the slides wouldn't get lost in the mail.

As far as getting into photography, it depends on your budget. I would try to go digital SLR, and I can give you some thoughts if you go that direction. Anythingi less than SLR, I would have to ask around.

One thing I love about SLR shooting in RAW mode is how much you can digitally manipulate the exposure without losing detail. It's amazing really.

Ok, that's right. I can take the slides down to the local camera shop (Inkley's) and they can do that for me.

I was, indeed, considering going the digital SLR route. It turns out that the tax return is better than I had anticipated so I'll have some disposable income to work with.

Of course, I'm still a cheapskate, so if that makes any difference.....

choose between the canon and nikon lines.

I can't really help you there. You're probably fine with either. But remember once you're in, you're in. The investment is in the lenses. And you can't swap nikon for canon and vice versa.

Then you need to choose a body based on your budget. Various tradeoffs. In megapixels and advanced features.

Most importantly, don't get cheap lenses. You will regret it.

I've spent way too much on my body, 2 lenses, flash, accessories.....now that I think about it. But it's been worth it to get great photos of my wife, son, and friends. Plus it is a lot of fun.

Agreed. I need to spend the money on the lenses, as it's definitely something that falls into the "you-get-what-you-pay-for" category.

As the time gets closer, I'll consult a bit more, if you don't mind...

Ahhhhhhh, Sakura.

Makes one long for a bento, or at least a BBQ squid on a stick.
