Oh my. This will be an interesting fall.

Here in Provo we have a surprisingly good lineup of D candidates lined up to challenge Bramble & co. With the voucher issue blowing up and with all of the scandals, we just may be able to throw some bums out.

This is what the Utah GOP has come to. Legislators bullying local officials and judges to help out there buddies in business. Principles will always give way to power.

I'm from Mapleton and I can't even begin to tell you what an absolute a**hole Gibby is, and the extent of his bullying tactics against the city.

Mapleton, with some foresight, has protected its bench; all development on the hillside up to the Bonneville shoreline is protected -- except for Gibby's parcel. See Provo, Springville, and other cities to see what happens when cities don't protect their mountainsides. Maple mountain is beautiful, and it has yet to undergo the knife of shaved and cut hillsides and switchbacked roads zigzagging up its face. Owners of other land along the hillside were given tradeable development rights in the valley (basically, for every development right on the hillside, the city gave them three development rights in the valley, which they can sell on an open market to owners of land in the valley).

Anyways, Gibby has been locked in a lawsuit with the city for years, has sued city officials (including the old farmer mayor for millions of dollars), has browbeat, threatened, screamed, and done everything under the sun to get the city to give away the mountain. The city has agreed to allow him to develop 40+ lots on the mountain (a ton!), creating a special zone for his property (illegal spotzoning in my opinion) in order to settle the lawsuit. But Gibby now wants millions for the delay (can't sell his lots now) and for who knows what.

Buttars is right in the middle of it. Gibby has been a huge financial donor to Buttars' campaigns and "causes," and Buttars has repeatedly threatened Mapleton to introduce legislation in the legislature in order to force Mapleton to give Gibby what he wants. Buttars is the epitome of what is wrong with Utah politics.

And it doesn't stop there -- Gibby has sued his business partner in the development, which was the dumbest move yet on his part: the business partner is now giving details about the depths to which Gibby has sank, including funneling money to Buttars through illegal channels. The Salt Lake Trib is developing the story now and it has yet to be made public. I hope this will be the death knell in Buttars' very large coffin. May he rot in hell.

This is what a one party system and plenty of voter apathy will always lead to.
