I know exactly what you mean.

Do you ever make it out Livermore way? Wente Vineyards actually has a nice restaurant out there and decent live music, esp if you like 70s and 80s artists. I know it is basically in the complete opposite direction from your place to Oakland, but still close enough that it is worth a visit.
