I thought Walmart sold everything?

Actually, I have seen those butane canisters at both WalMart and Smith's Marketplace near my home. Not to mention Sportsmans Warehouse or Cabela's, which are just a little further away.

I've also heard that they now have different fuel mixtures you can purchase to offset some of the issues around altitude and cold, but I haven't looked to see what the difference is in cost.

Eddie (and anyone else that might care to answer):

Hoping to recapture some of our lost and misspent youth my old HS buddie and I are looking to plan a trip into the Uintahs in the near future. It has been years since I camped there (think decades). Any suggestion about when or where to go? We're thinking about 3-4 days is all.

TIA

All of my Uintah trips are centered on where the good fishing is. Since you don't fish, I am not sure my recommendations will help much.

It's not that I don't fish, it's just that I haven't for many years. Even so, some of your favorite hikes would be appreciated.

OK. Do you have Google Earth installed? You can view each site in beautiful 3D detail if you do. I will tell you the keyword to type in Google Earth in each case.

1. The Chain Lakes are beautiful and the fishing is awesome. And you could venture from there over to King's Peak if you feel adventurous. The only downside is that the hike in is pretty steep. Make sure you leave yourself a full day to hike in. And the hike out is all downhill.
Google Earth: Upper Chain Lake Dam

2. Fox Lake Area (can't remember the name of this drainage). Beautiful scenery. Hike is moderate by Uintah standards (not too much elevation change). You can go in lots of different directions, depending on interest.

3. Brown Duck Basin. It is NW of Moon Lake. Tworoose Lake has great fishing. What I like to do here is drive through the indian reservation (ignoring the warning signs) and drive up the ridge on the south rim of the basin. You can then park your vehicle at about 13000 ft and hike down into the basin. The view from the ridge is fabulous. Then you can hike out with lighter backpacks.

4. Garfield Basin. I haven't been there, but my brother likes it.

Good luck.
