You guys realize you can wager real money on box office openings. I think the market is pretty thin in general but you can actually "put down and win real cash money" on such things. The initial lines seem to indicate that the expected opening is greater than 120 but less than 130.

I was reading about $130. Sounds like most of the pundits are alligned.

The opening will be slightly skewed because they are counting the midnight showings as Friday (not Thursday, even though technically it is not thurs), so the Fri numbers will be massive...which seems to be the trend.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/

This site has the top five at

1. Spiderman 3 2007, 151
2. Pirates 2 2006, 136
3. Shrek 3 2007, 122
4. Spiderman 2002, 115
5. Pirates 3 2007, 115

also
10. Indiana Jones 2008, 100
11. Iron Man 2008, 99

Economy's down but you have two movies up there high in 2008 already. Batman's going to beat them handily.

I'm going to go with 130.

I watched "Philadelphia" on LOGO last night, it was the first time I've ever watched that network. I would have to say 90% of the commercials were for "Mama Mia" and male enhancement products.

It is interesting that almost all of the Top 10 had Thursday night Midnight showings to cram in an extra night. You can only count 3 days gross to be eligible for the "opening weekend" list.

I have, but keep in mind that this is an almost unheard of number. We are now entering Spiderman/Shrek territory. I do think it could break the record though.

The play is adequate, but ABBA is not Led Zepplin.

Why can't they do a Led Zepplin play?

Batman is also going to benefit substantially from all the IMAX theatres it is opening in. To Pelagius' re: it doing well in spite of the economy, movies are often immune from economic hardships that hit other industries. In fact, in some cases the worse things are the more likely the public will be to escape to the movies.

I will say that I don't think that it will top Spidey 3, partly because none of those top five opened against another movie. They were the only thing going that weekend. That said, I am becoming more convinced that those who are predicting Mama Mia to do $25M this weekend are off a good 7-10M. I think that Batman will suck all the air out of it.
