In the book that I just finished (Lance Armstrongs War), he mentions that when EPO was really big, several Dutch(I think?) riders died in their sleep due to hematocrit being too high and being unable to push the sludge through their arteries. They started setting an alarm clock a couple of times per night to wake them up, have them do some light calisthenics to get the blood moving again, and keep them alive through the night. Problem solved.

It was also the authors contention, that nearly, if not all, of the top riders have doped in the past. He never said it straight out, but implied that his research led him to believe Lance did as well.

It would not surprise me if the cycling culture required it. And if there is a new innovation which is undetectable, people will try it again.

It will make it interesting again though if we see riders with bad days and good days.

When Viking powers away from me during the Ulcer, I'll just know it's the drugs.

My blood is like sludge but it's not from EPO, it's from OREO.

Apparently all the domestiques and winners do a combination, depending upon time in season, of EPO, steroids and cortizones. The domestiques have to do it to keep up with the winners, and each must purchase his own drugs. it sounds more credible based on feedback I'm receiving.

The riders are hooked up to a machine to monitor heart rate, even during Tour to avoid heart attack.

Pedro Delgado was the one that started the EPO craze, the one who demolished Lemond, who was into blood doping.
Like I said, you could be right. I have not read the book. That story sounds like one of those anecdotes that was probabyl true once, but maybe not every time.

Read that book, and you might become convinced that it is a level field, with all members of domestiques and winners cheating at the same level.
"You don't ride the Tour de France on mineral water alone," said five times winner Jacques Anquetil.

Riders have been looking for an edge for a long time.

I don't think I've ever seen a thinner athlete and I'm amazed that those tiny muscles can carry him up the hill like they do. I think people came out of Auschwitz heavier than him.

I hope Rasmussen wins and it turns out he doped. Just like Landis.

The Tour needs more pain, before it will be rid of cheaters.

Jealous of this? I don't think so.

By the way, I notice he has an armband tattoo. I'll bet the tattoo artist used less ink on that one than any other he's given in his entire career.
