Were you spanked by your parents?

I only remember getting spanked once, but I guess that counts.

I should have been spanked when I was in 5th grade. My buddy and I kept calling a phone sex line that another idiot in our class told us was free. By the time the bill came, we'd rung up $80 in calls. My Mom was furious. I spent the entire summer in my room.

They still had corporal punishment when I was in elem. and middle school.

I experienced the last of a lot of things. Like jungle gyms over concrete. See-saws.

My mom would hit us with her shoe every now and then.

Her shoes never hurt, but we all kept that as our own collective secret. I would sometimes pretend that it hurt. Other times I think I just looked out the window or at whatever else was happening in the room at the time.

When my parents spanked me (esp. my dad), I would laugh while he was doing it, with the purpose of further infuriating him.

My dad was not one who spanked in calmness.

When I was in jr high I said something horrible to my older sister. She cried. When he heard what I said, my dad kicked my ass. Days later, he told me to never let anyone disrespect my sister (or mom) the way I did, even if it meant getting my ass kicked. Lesson learned.

I remember being spanked once by my mother. She did while it in a rage, and I could tell she immediately regretted it.

I have no plans to use it as a form of discipline.

We had nightly spankings for the boys. I, enjoyed them least of all, but my brother antagonized Mom most of all.

My father would receive this greeting, "Herodotus, Alexander and Augustus have been misbehaving and you need to punish them."

"Boy, go pick the belt you're going to be spanked with."

I usually selected the fat leather belt, not the skinny belts, as those tended to leave more welts than the fat ones.

We received the allotment, of ten to thirty whippings across the bar buttocks, which meant an especially energetic evening would often leave welts across the legs as well.

My brother egged on Mom, by taunting, "that didn't hurt."

I took my spankings like any whipped puppy, and cried profusely. Of course, the one thing Dad did that never made sense, a child was receiving a crisp and firm belting, to which the inevitable crying would ensue.

And this was his response, "Stop crying. You'll be spanked until you stop."

Never made sense then and doesn't make sense now.

As a result of those fond memories, S&M doesn't really have much appeal for me.

Spankings don't work, though a quick paddle for a toddler might be enough. Once you can reason with the child, IMHO you drop the paddling.

This reminds me of two stories my wife and in-laws tell from her childhood.

1. Same as you but she actually went to school and her parents actually WERE visted by CPS.

2. MIL and wife were at the grocery store when she was about 4 or 5. Lady asked her what her name was. "<firsname> Godddamned <lastname>"

I avoided several because we had a Puerto Rican kid in our neighborhood who we could blame for everything. It helped us that he had older brothers who were in constant trouble with the law.

I don't spank kids. I rarely ground them. I deny them privileges and planned events. My oldest boy didn't get to go to Lagoon for a friend's birthday last summer because he decided to show disrespect for his mother a day or two before the day of fun. He was ticked, but has never been disrespectful since.

I was spanked several times.

I used to get even more angry when my Dad spanked me, so to get back at him I decided the next time I got spanked that instead of crying I was going to laugh out loud as long and as hard as I could until the spanking stopped. I remember that the harder he spanked me, the harder I laughed, and he'd start spanking me harder and it got ratcheted up, til I think he realized what he was doing.

It worked.

He never spanked me again after that.
