Default BYU vs Utah: The 2000s

Here is a fun little stat looking at the time period of 2000-2007. Is just did the average ranking (massey computer ranking) during the sample period for both BYU and Utah, and looked at which one had a higher ranking:

Code:
     +------------------------------------------------------------+
     | team ave_rank med_rank min_rank max_rank |
     |------------------------------------------------------------|
 40. | Brigham Young 55.442857 48 32 88 |
 61. | Utah 74.885714 68.2 32 142 |
     +------------------------------------------------------------+
Using this metric BYU has been substantially better than Utah since the year 2000: BYU's rank is 40th and Utah's rank is 61st.

Edit: These numbers are fun but they are wrong

I so want to run the 60s for you, but nobody does retro rankings far back for basketball. Here are the football numbers for the 60s if it helps:

Code:
     +------------------------------------------------------------+
     | team ave_rank med_rank min_rank max_rank |
     |------------------------------------------------------------|
 63. | Utah 59.888889 71 11 92 |
 84. | Brigham Young 80.222222 87 26 119 |
     +------------------------------------------------------------+

Thanks. I wanted to make sure we could help the Ute fans feel better about themselves. It's been a tough time for them.

Interesting how Utah can go to the Sweet Sixteen and have our highest rank be 32.

There are only two things that matter in college hoops. NCAA Tournament wins, and conference championships. Under these measures the Utes are far superior to BYU in the 2000's

Actually, you're right on both counts. 2005 is messed up in my data. Massey format must be different that year so my program is pulling of the wrong number.

Feeling sheepish. mpfunk is right; I messed up. Utah is actually slightly better during the period; but it is pretty close:

Code:
     +-----------------------------------------------------------+
     | team ave_rank med_rank min_rank max_rank |
     |-----------------------------------------------------------|
 49. | Utah 63.75 44.5 13 142 |
 56. | Brigham Young 70.75 53 32 187 |
     +-----------------------------------------------------------+

Yes, but more importantly, how fared the TRUE powerhouse up north, Weber State?

I'm also concerned about the other Street and Smith's top 20 program: Princeton. Great programs always bounce back.

They were both pretty dominate:

Code:
     +-------------------------------------------------------+
     | team ave_rank med_rank min_rank max_rank |
     |-------------------------------------------------------|
180. | Princeton 164.5 148 103 265 |
181. | Weber St 165.625 166 50 263 |
     +-------------------------------------------------------+
