As a victim of crime, I'm not really enthralled with the young men that go around and commit crime.

Since Cain slew Abel, some have been possessed by the desire to possess the fruit of others' labor.

I feel no sympathy for those who commit crime. They chose to break the law and should suffer the consequences.

But I've always believed that we as a society are too soft on first time offenders. If the idea or the penal system is to punish, it doesn't work - repeat offenders tell us that. If the idea is rehabilitate, it doesn't work - repeat offenders tell us that.

Swift, severe punishment works. I haven't heard much about anybody in the Middle East being arrested several times for theft.
