Hurricane Gustav could be a Category 5.
This is really scary stuff. You have to feel so sorry for the people in the Gulf Coast. The odds of a Category 5 hitting NO twice in 3 years are virtually zero.
Let's pray the storm is diverted to a less populated area. |

Yes, this would put a dagger in the recovery efforts. Bumper to bumper traffic on the coast heading out -- opening up both lanes of the freeway for 24 hours to facilitate evacuation. At least most people won't be there if it ends up getting hit badly. Trajectory shows that it should pass a little bit southwest of NOLA. Let's hope.

You know Katrina was Cat 3 on (on the decline from Cat 4) when it hit NO. The biggest problem from Katrina was the levee(s) breaking many hours after landfall. |

Looks like they learned from last time. Watch it hit Houston now.

It doesn't matter if it hits NO or not at this point, because the evacuation has already started, meaning that all kinds of services are going to be impacted in Houston and Dallas.
Ironically, in Katrina, most of the victims were housed in the Dallas Convention Center, which actually has a walmart convention this coming week. So they can "only" house 1000 fugitives there. That's just funny--a walmart convention with 1000 refugees from New Orleans mixed in. They need to get rid of N.O. |
