For what it's worth, information that I'm not supposed to have tells me that Elder Nelson's doctors believe he'll live another twenty years.

40% chance that it will be Elder Nelson.
30% chance it will be Elder Oaks.
30% chance it will be somebody else.

No matter who's called some people on here will bitch and moan about that particular Apostle and how they don't like their style very much. The countdown has begun.

It's a Cougarguard inevitability.

And there you will be to "call them on it." Thank goodness.

Nobody, other than a guess. Perhaps they are beyond having their feelings hurt, but it would be insulting in a typical organization.

I am putting my two cents in on Packer. I think his feelings would be hurt if he was not the choice, again.

I will only bitch and moan if its Packer. I will only bitch if its Holland, while I will only moan if its Oaks. Otherwise I will just murmur. So you are wrong about that one.

Here's the thing: Packer has been the acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve ever since the days of President Benson. To put him in the First Presidency would disrupt a good deal of continuity already extent in the quorum. I'm not saying the church wouldn't survive, but I am saying that to place him in the first Presidency would shake things up more than they need to be shaken up.

It is not typical to take the most senior apostle and place them in the First Presidency. The only reason the senior apostle is so often in the first presidency (which is only true about half the time, if my familiarity with the statistics serves me right) is because they basically never leave the first presidency.

Holland. If not him, Oaks. Certainly an ex-BYU president. Bateman or Samuelson as an outside shot.
