I just rekindled in me, and kindled (?) in my oldest son, an interest in a terrific children's book series called "The Great Brain." They are about a Catholic family of boys growing up in turn of the century St. George, Utah, and are terrific. I would recommend them to any boy or girl. The author is John D. Fitzgerald, and they are very entertaining. They are more 'boyish' books, but I would imagine that young girls might really like them as well. As I recall, there were 6 or 7 books, but it looks like you can only get 4 in the stores anymore.

Does anybody else have suggestions for good series of children's books for kids under the age of 10?

The Boxcar Children series is a great one.

The Encyclopedia Brown series is another good one.

And yes, the Great Brain is terrific.

I loved those books as a kid

Under 10, I liked the Frog and Toad books, Trolls, the Sesame Street books, and the Superfudge collection.

I liked the Great Brain series.

I read most of the Tarzan books by Burroughs as well as most of the Louis Lamour books when I was a kid.

nice call on encyclopedia brown. i happened to take my kids to b&n this afternoon and spotted that series and bought the first one. i remember reading those as a kid too.

I just asked my seven year old. His list includes:

Encyclopedia Brown
Junie B Jones
Harry Potter
Chronicles of Narnia
Magic Treehouse (although he says these are a bit too easy to read)
Ralph S Mouse
Judy Blume's SuperFudge series
Flat Stanley
