Default I have a great idea for bike safey

Imagine driving down a country road, and suddenly you hear your car give a characteristic "beep-beep-beep". This is a warning signal to indicate that you are within 200 feet of a cyclist. The cyclist has in his possession a device that signals cars of his presence.

I think this is a great idea, but it would require legislation to make it happen.

What do you guys think?

doesn't have to be a beep. or it could autmoatically shut power to the radio when beeping. point is you have a warning system.

of course many here would oppose this because it would be the govt. "forcing" people to be safe.

You must not have many bike riders around there. Where I live there are some roads where you would not be able to go more than 100' without the dang thing going off.

you could have something where it only goes off when speed is over 45. a lot of cycling deaths are on highways where drivers aren't paying attention, veer into shoulder.

You wouldn't need necessarily a warning "buzzer"...but more of a warning, blinking "light" which could be integrated into the cycle computer.

Much like at a large company I used to work at...there were so many office spaces with phones, that a "blinking" light would be attached to the phone so you knew which one it was.

This could be a good idea, and would certainly heighten the cyclists attention.

Now...getting it into cars is another thing. It would require a transmitter, your cycle computer would require a "receiver" etc.

A blinking light inside the dashboard console would be just perfect I think.

it's more the drivers that need to be warned than the cyclists. Most of these deaths are due to driver error, not cyclist error IMO.

No disputing that. But, I would think it would/could/should be incorporated on both sides.

A fellow rider on our team was killed this year as he just did a U-turn and got broad-sided by a car. He was an experienced cyclist too. Kind of strange.
