White slip-on shoes, white socks and a white belt.
Green shirt unbuttoned halfway.
Gold chains. At least 4 of them.

That would look ridiculous without a white watch.

You're so uncouth.

When you hit the town dressed like that, there is no need to know what time it is.

So, the question then is: what color belt/shoes/socks go with brown slacks. This is causing me much anguish, so I appreciate your replies.
First - I think you should have addressed this question to some women.
Second - You need to tell us what color, exactly, are the brown slacks.
Third - Blue is a good choice, but against TripleD's advice, I would say no black, unless you are going for a MUCH more modern or Euro look and are wiling to go un-traditional on a shirt/tie. Though I am all for the Brown&Black rule being thrown out, I think you have to guage what attire is appropriate for what occasion, and also your level of comfort stepping out of that zone. Which I would guess you are pretty traditional if you are just now buying brown slacks. (Though I think belt and shoes should always match or be close in color.)
Fourth - Oxblood shoes are great with brown slacks or a brown shoe that is darker than the slacks (still I need to know color of slacks). Also a modern but low-key color of shirt in style now could be like a rustic orange color with a great tie, or even a light yellow. I am thinking dress shirt BTW. And if you aren't willing to go that far - just do a great sailing blue or cobalt blue - Or just go white shirt with a great colored stand-out tie that brings the two together. That can still be very cool.

Yeah this is Gidg, I know I am only 24, but that can atleast give me credit for a more modern (but still conservative) sense of style. My husband always gets compliments when he dresses up, and who do you think puts that outfit together the night before while he's watching Sport Center? Me.

What?!? Are you questioning my fashion advice?

It's all about getting noticed. Why blend in when you can stand out?

I advise against a man going to women to ask how to get dressed.

Keep in mind, over the years, women have worn the following:

leg warmers
jelly shoes
Palmettos jeans
LA Gear high tops
stirrup stretch pants

You only have two color choices for shoes....black and cordovan (or what Gidg correctly calls oxblood). technically cordovan only refers to the shoe material...horsehide...but they have come to be known as the reddish color shoe that most men wear.

Brown shoes in general.....yikes. Meesah no liken. That works if you are a UPS driver or if you live in Utah and still wear Doc Martens or anything with bulky lug soles. Other than that, lose the brown shoes, asap.

Also, square toed dress shoes....out.

And while we are at it...no more Von Dutch, please.

Lets have a fashion category.

Just curious; how much do you spend a year on clothes, and how many pairs of square-toed shoes do you own?

Pants are a dark brown (note to DDD, they are not pleated, and I am pleasingly trim). Yes, my dressing is fairly conservative. Given that my company is "Business Casual", I don't generally wear a tie (but yes on the dress shirt, no polos or anything). I don't own an orange shirt, but maybe I can wash one of my white shirts with one of my wife's red socks, and one of her yellow socks.

I agree with the no sqare toe dress shoes rule, because I am old.

I am leaning toward going with the blue shirt, oxblood shoes and belt, and tan (black?) socks. Sadly, this will be my most daring fashion statement in 5 years (with the exception of when I wear my father's old sports coats (from the 70s) to church).

Yay! I think what you are leaning towards is great. Blue shirt oxblood shoes and belt and try to match your socks to your pants. No black socks with this ensemble. Brown shoes can be yucky, but if you can find a nice dark pair (Ecco brand is good but expensive, but Sooo comfy Surfah says) than I think you can sport them and they can look really nice. Anyway, I give my approval for your leaning. Sounds like winner. Make sure and post a pic, so we can see the fruits of our labor.
