Of all the chain Italian restaurants out there, the only one at which I ever willingly eat is Buca di Beppo and it's not because of the food.

The food is so-so but the setting is awesome. It's just like sitting down in a home in Sicily. The tacky decor brings back terrific memories.

Hey Il Pad,

My cousin's boyfriend served in Italy and he says here in the states, Buca Di Beppo is the closest he's had to the real thing. What do you think of that assessment?

It is close, for a chain, but I wouldn't say that it's close to what you can get in Italy. Then again, that's just my opinion and it has been 15 years since I last visited Italy.

As I noted, the atmosphere at Buca is awesome. Perhaps that's why I eat there and maybe your cousin's boyfriend is influenced by that as well.

Did he serve in the southern mission? The food at Buca's is southern Italian influenced.

From Geneva Switzerland:

1. Lardon Truc - Fry lardons (cubed bacon), then add creme fraiche (kinda like sour cream, but not sour). Poor over fresh pasta.

2. Kebabs from the local shop with fries on tope

3. Raclette (Specially melted cheese over ham, potatoes, pickles, etc) - Nothing better than Tuesday night Raclette followed by a game of Risk that extended into P-day on Wednesday.

I went to a local Fazoli's in Firenze and Bologna. It wasn't as good as the Fazoli's in American Fork.

I spent the summer in Amsterdam, London, Dublin, and western Ireland. In all four locations, Italian restaurants were as common as everything else. Is it the same way throughout the rest of Europe?

I think the best meals I had though, were at an Indian restaurant in Amsterdam and at the Guinness factory in Dubiln.

All of the Italian food was average to me. The best Italian I've had is at various restaurants in San Diego's Little Italy. But then again, I also like Ottavio's in Provo.

Ironically, I would almost rather eat bologna than eat Fazolis.
