I think it is done to project the idea that the are presiding locally over the meeting.

I haven't seen this, but it will allow me to tell my somewhat related story. When I was on the High Council, our stake was very large in numbers, and we had one piece of property that had both the Stake Center and a regular ward building on it. For stake conference and other large meetings, we would have overflow in the second chapel. As the junior HCman, I usually got assigned to sit on the stand in the second chapel. It was fun for the first few minutes, as I looked down at all the little people in the pews, but it got quickly less fun as I could not sleep, talk to my wife (who was down with the common folk), play dots, or do any other customary Stake Conference activities. Plus, I didn't even have a monitor, I had to look up over my shoulder to see anything.

The worst was when we had a super-secret fireside once. Before the day of the fireside, only the Stake Presidency, HC, and a few others knew that it was to be Steve Young, who had selected our stake due to our extreme righteousness or something (Br. Young was still an active player at the time, and we were in California, so this was a very big deal). The youth were told that we were having a super-secret fireside, but not told the details until the day of it. A few days before the big event, the Stake President handed out assignments to the HC; some sat on the stand, some escorted Steve and his entourage, etc. The Stake President got to me and said "Brother Addison, I would like you to preside in the overflow building". So I sat up there and stared down at the 7 or 8 youth who weren't resourceful enough to squeeze themselves into the Stake Center. This despite the fact that I am pretty sure that no other member of the HC had shown their devotion to BYU football earlier that season by drilling a hole through the lock on the door in the Church where the satellite equipment was kept in order to watch a game against friggin' Rice or something.

I went to the Priesthood Session at the Paris Tabernacle in Bear Lake. I love going to the priesthood session there, especially if there are any talks on heritage/faith of the Pioneers. Sitting inside and gazing at that building and knowing the humble efforts gone through to erect it well, makes my nipples hard.

The post session raspberry milkshakes are dreamy as well. Anyone want to hook up sometime up that way for a GC priesthood session?

The Paris Tabernacle is a great building. The trompe l'oeil wood grain is incredible. The pioneers there were apparently hardwood snobs, but it makes for a fascinating and beautiful building. The last time I was there we happened upon the organist who was practicing. there were a few of us and he gave us a bit of a speecha bout the organ. Facinating stuff.

The raspberry milkshakes from that area are a Godsend. I'd be willing to drive that far for one of those.

Our SP does the same thing. But he doesn't have a monitor to watch, he just sits and listens.
