What a great movie.

First, the movie more than deserves its rating, and not for gore alone. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. Second, one who goes looking for the history of the battle of Thermopylae will doubtlessly be somewhat dissapointed. Numerous little inaccuracies (and a few big ones, such as the elephants and rhinoceri) exist throughout the movie, all of which have the effect of embellishing the story.

But the movie isn't telling the history-- it is telling the legend, and does so beautifully. The cinematography is gorgeous, the action scenes are amazing, and the visual treats are abundant. There are enough authentications to please the history buffs, with many of the important lines and moments preserved. One walks away impressed by the skill, devotion, and bravery of the Spartans and a better understanding of how the battle of Thermopylae changed the western world forever.

Good stuff.

300 was fabulous. It was brutal and inspiring. Yes, it was over the top, but you expect that in a war movie especially a movie playing off of a comic book playing off the legend.

There were some great cheesy lines that were classic: "The arrows will blot out the sun...then we will fight in the shade." "This IS SPARTA!"

Very entertaining...and no question, a very well deserved R rating. There was a few nudie scenes, no bad language, and a heckuva lot of decapitations, spears thru the body and blood.

That cheesy line is recorded by Herodutus and is the motto for the Greek 20th Armory Division. Archaeologists have also found evidence of that shower of arrows too.

Many of the good lines are historical.

"Spartans! Lay down your arms!" "Persians! Come and get them!"

Beautiful.

I saw it on Friday while in Vegas trying to kill time before heading to the Semi-Finals.

I enjoyed it, but didn't think it was this spectacular movie or anything. Wouldn't care if I saw it again. The over the top Bombastic nature of it was actually quite fun.

So, the Iranian government claims the movie is anti-Iranian propaganda and offensive to the history of its people. A cultural adviser suggests the film is "psychological warfare."

Miss Kizner speaks the truth. Here is additional research from an AP writer, finding "outrage" by Iranians:
