You don't want to look like to big of puss. The NyQuil was a life saver for me. About dusk you take your shot and sleep through the night while the scouts are out raising hell until about two or three in the morning.

Don't buy a mummy bag that you can't move in. Buy a big Coleman bag with the cloth insides that is big enough to hold you and your pillow that you snuck in.

don't buy a cheap Coleman. You can buy a nice down bag that is not a mummy bag.

I used to keep yelling at the kids to shut up. Then I just learned to bring ear plugs. I sleep well and they stay up all night. Everybody is happy.

I owuld go to REI and get a good but light bag. Yes, REI does sell oversized bags mide for the high and mighty. If you are car camping I also reccommend Rei's oversize cots, which I find more comfrontabel than ari mattresses. My good friend is 6'7" and 300+ lbs. and he sleeps comfrotbaly on these cots. Even if you are not that large, the XL cot is very sturdy and lets you roll around without fear of collapse. Plus, it is extra wide in addition to being extra long so you can roll over if you want to. I highly recommned this approach if you are car camping.

DOn't get one for the kid, however, as it is a rite of passge to sleep on the ground. Tell him you need it for an old war injury or something.

Maybe in Texas. I've camped in places where a sleeping bag was essential to keep from freezing.

When was the last time our rugged Mike slept in the mountains? The last time this summer he was in Montana?

Another problem about sleeping on the ground are spiders and scorpions. These critters tend to crawl into shoes and warm places if one is not careful.

I wonder how the pioneers survived without sleeping bags....

the point is that with layering you can accomplish what a sleeping bag does.

sleeping in my grandfather's unheated basement, blankets did just fine, in Wyoming.
