The three novels I listed are darker and more psychological than even Anna Karenina, certainly more so than War and Peace. By Hadji Murad, which is a war novel and was published postumously, he had lost all of his starry eyed admiration for Russian nobility and royalty and the Church. Bloom, by the way, thinks Hadji Murad is his greatest. It's partly about Islam and Islamic culture.
I appreciate the suggestions. It gives me somewhere to start.

Atlas Shrugged seems to be a college age classic and little more.

Is there anyone who isn't a raging Bircher conservative that loves Atlas Shrugged?

I don't know, I've never read it. But it seems that it is only a reinforcing dogma for those inclined already to believe in it.

I've yet to read any Tolstoy but I want to read his works. Gotta expand my horizons.

My favorite is still The Count of Monte Cristo. Revenge is fun.
Count of Monte Cristo is high on my list of favorites too.

My favorite book of all time is still Tarzan. No finer piece of escape literature has ever been written.

I also really like the Picture of Dorian Gray.

I'm also a fan of Great Expectations.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is another favorite.

Anything by Ray Bradbury is quality.

If any of you were around long enough to remember my dating story on the board about the date that ended up in a tree in the middle of downtown LA at midnight wearing a suit, that guy was a HUGE fan of Atlas Shrugged, he was so weird that I have never had any desire to read anything by Rand since.

One of the most frustrating experiences of my life was slogging my way through The Sound and The Fury. Faulkner blows - at least for dumb guys like me.

I love The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment. Dostoevsky is fantastic.

Some of my other favorites are Huckleberry Finn, The Grapes of Wrath, and Brave New World.
