Maybe, maybe not. There can be many different meanings to the song. One explanation is that his girlfriend is simply sick and even though they have had struggles and disagreements, he wants her to pull through.

Another explanation is with his continual references to what he would have liked to have done to her (...I could have murdered her...I could have strangled her) points to a sign of him being abusive to her in the relationship and one night it went too far. Looking back at it though, he hopes she pulls through to be with her again. Talk about a typical abusive man/woman role.

My point is--its debateable what the song is about.

"Where Did You Sleep Last Night" from Nirvana MTV Unplugged, originally by Leadbelly or some old-timey bluesman.

Elvis Costello - Complicated Shadows, a song he wrote hoping Johnny Cash would record it. Didn't happen though.

Elvis Costello - Hidden Shame - Maybe it was this one he wanted Johnny Cash to do. Maybe both. I'm too lazy to look it up.

"I had a friend when I was just a boy
We were like brothers, we would run and hide
And we went walking on a high hillside
And I really don't how it happened
He turned to me and had this strange look in his eye
And not a single word was spoken
I must have pushed him, but I don't remember why
And all at once, he lay there broken
And I walked down without him and I didn't even sigh"

Also very Cash-ish

Bruce Springsteen - Johnny 99, from "Nebraska". Johnny Cash did record this one - made it the title track of an album.

You have good taste, landpoke.

From the venerable Wikipedia:

"There has been much debate as to the meaning of the song, a ballad with a gentle, mellow arrangement juxtaposed with dark and bitter lyrics delivered with unmistakable venom. Costello has divulged little on this subject other than to say that it is about "disappointing somebody" and to deny suggestions that the lines "somebody better put out the big light" and "my aim is true" refer to murder. He has also declined to reveal who the song is about, writing in the liner notes for Girls Girls Girls, "Much could be undone by saying more." "

Will it surprise you to know this is not the first time I have been wrong?
