Country has become the place where miscellaneous "non categorized" music goes now. 10 Years ago would we have heard Bon Jovi or The Boss or John Cougar Melencamp on CMT? No way! But now, there's no real category for them, so they get thrown into the country music scene.

The Dixie Chicks will always be country because they established themselves there and Natalie's voice will always contain that Nazaly Twang to it.

In addition to the ones Robin listed, try out some artists such as:

James McMurtry
Jason Boland
Houston Marchman
Pat Green
Lyle Lovett
Cross Canadian Ragweed
Kacey Chambers
Jupiter Coyote
Robert Earl Keen
Steve Earle
Stone Coyotes
etc.

Some very good stuff there. And some excellent, highly intelligent, thoughtful lyrics. Stuff that would give a Nashiville producer turn purple.
Hey bucko, Kacey Chambers was the first person on my list.

I saw Steve Earle at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco. Excellent stuff.

Want to hear some Iron and Wine?

I made a music video of an Iron and Wine song. I'm in it with some extremely funky hair, so don't make fun of my funky hair. My son is in with some funky hair that I cut myself. Don't make fun of it.

Pretend you don't see my real name in the link:

p.s. be warned... the video contains graphic nudity and blood and guts.

We don't agree politically, but you and I have the same taste in clothing, as I have that same shirt. In fact, I'm wearing it as I post this.

No, that is NOT a mullet. And what did I say about the hair?? God has blessed me with something between a 'fro and a mullet... a mull-fro?

I was sporting the mull-fro at the time, and about a week of stubble. Not the best look, but I think it works with the nudity and gore.

I agree. But what do you call it? Alternative Country?

Steve Earle is awesome. An acquired taste, to be sure. But a tremendous talent. Unfortunately, I don't like his latest stuff all that much. I think he peaked with Train a Comin'. Outstanding album.
