Country is on fire, and that isn't even scratching the surface of the alt.country movement (of which I know next to nothing... except I like Wilco, and I hear there is a lot going on).

Pirate some of this music. You won't be sorry... except when you are burning in hell for stealing. But at least your ipod will be full, so hell won't be so bad.
I'm aware of a lot of that but don't consider it country. I like Calexico, Iron & Wine, Be Good Tanyas....add Kathleen Edwards, the Jayhawks, Slaid Cleaves and Billy Bragg to that list and to me what we are really talking about now is Alt-County. That is a WHOLE different deal. I have liked the Dixie Chicks because they have stuck to a blue grass sound, rather than the formulaic country/western crap the dominates the charts. I like Allison Krauss for the same reason. Not aware of Kasey chambers, will have to give him/her a listen.

The independent scene is where most of the good music is coming from now. The internet makes it possible to bypass all the filters to get right to it. Thank goodness.

Ah yes. Slaid Cleaves. I should have included him on my list.

For the record, Kacey Chambers is a she. From Australia.

Alt-Country IS country. The nashville crap is basically just hillbilly pop. Sha-nee-nee Twang, et al... Aren't singing country.

IMHO there are 3 categories.
Old "Classic" Country (e.g. Don Edwards)
Country (somewhere between bluegrass and folk)
Country Pop (e.g. Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, etc...)

I recommend:
Old 97's
Ryan Adams
Richard Buckner
Josh Ritter
Dale Watson
The Jayhawks
Wilco
Pinetop Seven
Derailers
Uncle Tupelo
The Bottle Rockets

See also:
Robert Earl Keen
Lyle Lovett

You forgot to mention that Kacey Chambers is so hot that her sweet voice and hot lyrics will buy you a one-way ticket to the Bishop's office.

The Dixie Chicks suck.

Natalie Maines has one of the most nails on a chalkboard voice I've ever heard. She sounds like she's been shot.

The Dixie Chicks suck.

I know who the Dixie Chicks are, but I wouldn't know one of their songs if it kicked me in the hiney.

I say let 'em say what they want about the current administration. Then they should thank God that they live in a country that allows them to do that and still reap huge financial benefits from music I've never heard.

I think that's pretty much what they're doing. I don't recall ever having heard them badmouth the US. They just say things about being ashamed that Bush is a Texan.

The problem (for them) is that their audience didn't like what they had to say. So... They took a little break. Now they're back and the first single is a song about not being ready to back down. They have also made public comments about abandoning the "country" market.

Unfortunately... The Dixie Chicks are (and always will be) a twangy hillbilly pop band and despite the fact that their album has done well out of the gate, the shine will wear off and when their fallback audience isn't there, they'll be gone.

It would be like the Dead coming out and telling everybody to take a bath, get off drugs and get a haircut. They might notice a sudden jump in sales from the people who support their new message but when that ended they'd still be the same band, only hippies would like their brand of music, and all the hippies would hate them.

I think this will be the fate of the dixie chicks.

Agree.

I also get a kick out of Toby Keith's 'Boot Up Your Ass' song.

As a member of hip hop nation, it is illegal against my values to like country....

I love:

Lyle Lovett
Nickelcreek (Bluegrass I know)
Dixie Chicks

I can't begin to tell you how good Lyle Lovett is in concert.

Nickelcreek is an awesome family concert. Problem being in Utah, they sell out quick whenever they come around.

Old country and bluegrass is where it's at.

Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc. I generally don't listen to Country radio, because I don't like alot of the new pop-Country. Alan Jackson is cool though. When it comes to radio, I'm all about the rock.
