He hasn't been nearly as funny since he started cycling through rehab stints, but in the day he could bring it with the best.

It seems his early days were as bad or worse than he is now. He's at his worse when he's cutting himself off midsentence over and over never finishing a train of thought, injecting strange noises and syllables and laughs and facial expressions.

You could read the above paragraph, injecting the strange noises, laughs, facial expressions, mistimed pauses, mixing up fast talking with slow talking etc. and it would pass for Robin Williams stand up.
