Default Church members trying to rip off other church members

so my wifes car was in the shop this morning, it had a bad rattle and we werent sure what it was, we find out its just the heat shield and the shop we had it at (who we take everything too) told us that it just needs a simple weld and that he would be surprised if it took more than 15 minutes to do, well he didnt have a welder so he referred us to another shop in american fork. My wife pulls in and the guy that owns the shop in AF is in our ward and actually taught us our temple prep classes, we know him very well. They exchange pleasantries etc, and my wife tells him what she needs done, so he puts the car on teh rack and tells her that he will just clamp the heat shield and wont charge her.

I thought that was nice of him, until he comes up to my wife and says that the cv boots are leaking, the timing belt is going out, and we need a new water pump. Now remember this was just at another mechanic shop and they didnt mention any of these other problems, he told my wife it would be about $1200 to fix everything.

So i tell her to hold off, and I call the previous shop to see if they had seen any of those problems and he told me that this guy was full of it, and to bring the car back in and he will double check. We take the car back in and he tells me that the CV boots are fine, that the timing belt sounds fine you cant check it unless you rip the engine apart, and that the water pump is fine.

I am tempted to call the guy that tried to get my wife to have all that work done and say something, but i dont want any tension. What do you think?

Rip hime a new one. I will bet the guy is inactive and his wife works. He probably smokes too.

Seriously, if you got screwed it doesn't matter who he is or how active, he should treat you fairly.

Of course if he is in church leadership you shouldn't unless you don't care about getting suspended on CB.

Sounds like you giving a guy a sweet loan deal for 1/2 point origination and then nailing him for two points on the back end he doesn't see.

That sucks. Unfortunately many members, even active ones have no sense of ethics, IMO.

half the posts over on cougarboard make me think lots of church members in general tend to have a serious issue with ethics.

I hate that sort of thing, especially when most people, myself included, wouldn't know whether the CV joint boots are OK or about to crumble to dust. I'm glad I know a mechanic I feel I can trust, and it doesn't hurt to own a copy of a basic manual for your car so you can see the complexity of various tasks and maybe take on some of the easier ones. One thing in this guy's defense, the timing belt on some cars is a maintenance item (60k miles?) and if it fails your car is dead in the water. In a few cars if it breaks it can cause the pistons to slap the valves and you are looking at a major engine work. When you replace the timing belt it is a very easy thing to do to replace the water pump at the same time so its not a bad thing to suggest. So on this one I would say it depends on how the issue was presented. As a "must do now" or "really should do sometime" item.

Those that voice and proclaim their righteousness so vigorously I am most nervous of. They can be great people, but the con artists and porn kings also come from the group.

I am not speaking of any CB members. I am speaking about those who like to proclaim there rightousness loudly and often.

There are those people everywhere. Some have no conscience but know how to speak to those they associate with and take advantage by speaking that group's language. I don't think it has just to do with mormons. It happens in every culture.
