Default Supposing McCain had chosen an actual running mate

I am curious to know how McCain's final numbers in swing states will look in comparison to what they were before the Palin pick. Does anyone know of websites that show state-by-state projections from late August?

realclearpolitics and fivethirtyeight should have all the numbers archived. It would take some doing to look up everything, though.

I do think McCain could have made it considerably closer. His campaign was badly mismanaged toward the end. But with the economy crashing, and him having put all his eggs in the defense basket, I'm not sure any VP could have saved him.

Here's Ohio:

McCain was certainly doing better in mid-August, but it's impossible to know how much of the freefall was due to the economy, how much was due to Obama's advertising advantage, and how much was due to the poor publicity due to the vice presidential selection.

Interesting question. I saw the results of a poll today indicating that 60% of Americans felt she was unqualified to be VP (as opposed to 38% the other way). That had to have a substantial impact on the ticket.

I saw the breakdown of how many actually changed/determined their votes because of Palin. It wasn't a huge number, but it wasn't zero, either.

A better question would be who could he have picked to make a difference in the outcome of the election?

While I would have preferred Romney, I think the Mormon factor would have still been in play.

Romney would have been much better. The real problem, though was McCain's campaign's mismanagement. CNN just said his staff should be sued for malpractice.

Il Pad, the Mormon thing wouldn't have been a problem near so much as the dual rich white boy thing.

Possibly, but being the natural pessimist, I expect the worse.

As for the dual rich white boy thing, is that any worse than the rich black man and rich white man teaming up? Rich is rich, isn't it?
