I couldn't agree more but my reasons are a little more shallow. To many guys and not enough girls.

On a related note I was listening to Glenn Beck one day and some guy calls in and says this is the reason why China will invade and take over the U.S. someday.

So shunning SU has no effect.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

So anything to learn from their "missionary" efforts? 100 million... Not bad.

Oddly, SU is one of the most committed to maintaining the Cougarguard community.

Then I explain to them how we handle Jehovah's Witnesses who don't want blood transfusions (respect their choice and let them die even if the blood transfusion will save them). And I explain how we respect an individual's choice on personal matters as long as they don't cause harm to others.

In my experience, most Chinese people do not understand the concept of respecting an individual's personal choice. They believe that a government can and must go to ANY length (including dishonesty and murder) to ensure the existence of a "stable" society where people submit their will to the will of their noble leaders.
New to Chinese culture are you?

I would seriously love to be enlightened by anyone who has more experience with Chinese culture.

All I know is that my coworker cooked and ate the placenta after his new baby was born, and he's an MD who thinks it's healthy to drink your own urine.

Very confusing for me. Somebody please help me out.

Not sure I can enlighten you but I've had a bit of experience. I would classify myself as an "interested informal observer" of Chinese culture - a Sinophile by hobby, if you will. As one who has experienced a few WTF moments when interacting with Chinese, the surprise/frustration implicit in your post made me chuckle.

I think it is pretty safe to generalize that Chinese culture, as with other Asian cultures such as Korean and Japanese, values group identity and duty to the group over individualism. Concepts such as family honor, filial duty, respect for elders, honoring ancestors, etc. flow from those group values. You could spend a lifetime exploring that. Another fascinating area to explore is the concept of "guanxi" which influences, or is embedded in, the social interactions of Chinese society. You could spend a lifetime on that as well.

Of course, working with mainland Chinese (as opposed to Chinese people from Taiwan) has it's own special brand of interestingness. I guess my only advice is to just make friends with and continue to try to understand your Chinese coworkers. It could be the start of a fascinating and very rewarding lifelong love of trying to understand what makes Chinese people tick.
