Default Yoga and cycling

I'm looking to strengthen my back so it doesn't tighten up during climbing so I went to my first yoga class yesterday in hopes of accomplishing that goal. Has anybody else done the yoga thing or is their something else out there that may be better?

I do ab workouts and core training but I understand yoga is helpful as well.

i've never thought of yoga as a primary core strengthening tool, but I really know very little of it. Pilates is a very popular way to strengthen the trunk.

For me, there's really no substitute for basic ab and back extensor resistance training.

Yoga is excellent for your core. I've been doing it for several months now (off and on) and have noticed a significant difference when I'm doing the sessions regularly. Pilates and yoga are very similar and as far as I can tell Pilates is just yoga positions without all the hokey feel good stuff that I don't enjoy.

I was kinda hoping the hokey feel good stuff would take the place of church.

Don't you kind of find yourself laughing inside while they're focusing on the breathing and the meditative stuff? I just tivo my classes and ff through that stuff now. There's a channel we get on dish that has a bunch of yoga and pilates classes and I record those to avoid the embarrassment of a class full of people seeing how inflexible I am.

At the end of class when the teacher said her word and the class said that word back I was about ready to say amen.
