Default $317,000,000.000.00 and counting

For anyone that cares, the price of the Iraqi war is now believed to be over $317 billion.

There have been over 2700 American soldiers killed in the war. (http://icasualties.org/oif/)

It is believed that there have been nearly 5500 Iraqi police/military deaths since the war started. (http://icasualties.org/oif/IraqiDeaths.aspx)

It is believed that around 14,000 Iraqi civilians have died in the war so far. (http://icasualties.org/oif/IraqiDeaths.aspx)

How is that for depressing?

As stated to protect my hiney, I never supported this war and the costs are mounting, as we knew they would. Now as far as the actual accounting, I wouldn't know how to verify it, but I suspect some hard costs that would be invested in the military are included therein, if I had to guess.

I remember for example a local trial upon which the media reported and wanted to make a big deal about. They even included the judge's salary, his law clerks and other personnel, who would have been employed had the trial proceeded or not.

The same may be true of that accounting, even though I agree the costs are too high.

Imagine if we had built schools, provided free health care and built infastructure.

That's outrageous. Any conflict that causes more than 10 casualties is not worth it.

I read an article about six months ago that projected the total cost to be $2 trillion, after years of paying out veterans benefits, etc.

I saw recently that the military is drawing up plans to continue with about the same number of troops until 2010. This brings a whole new meaning to the chant 4 more years.

In reality I think that there is no possible way that I can think of that the U.S. maintains the political will necessary to do the right thing in Iraq, which is to turn it into a stable, functioning, muti-ethni democracy sympathetic to our interests and able to help us with our oil problem. I believe that it would take at least a decade, if not longer to accomplish this, and more manpower than we have available, and probably well upward of 1 trillion.

So, I think if we are going to leave before the job is adequately done then we might as well leave sooner rather than later. Then we can start going back in to try and quell the sectarian violence that will surely erupt, or better yet we can get someone else to do it or help share the burden physically and economically.
