Default The "new tone"

Since the Left worked overtime to try and blame the horrific Giffords shooting on Sarah Palin and/or the Right (are they crosshairs or surveyors symbols??), I've been keeping track of the "new tone" that Obama called on us to use.

"Independent" ute4ever's casual use of one of the terms made me think it's time to post the results so far:
  • Apr 8, 2011, Louise Slaughter (D-NY) on the Republican budget: "Now they are here kill women"
  • Apr 8, 2011, Pelosi on the Republican budget: R's are here to wage "war on women"
  • Apr 8, 2011, Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC delegate) Gov't shutdown the "functional equivalent of bombing civilians."
  • May 31, 2011, Jonathan Chait: Tea Party is "Hezbollah wing" of the GOP
  • Jul 5, 2011, Chris Matthews: GOP is the Wahabis of American government
  • Jul 6, 2011, Tina Brown (Newsweek Editor): GOP is "suicide bombers"
  • Jul 25, 2011, Peter Goodman (HuffPo columnist): GOP is "acting like terrorists. Yes, terrorists." The coward then removed the analogy from his published column.
  • Jul 26, 2011, Tom Friedman, NY Times: Tea Party is "Hezbollah faction" of the GOP
  • Jul 27, 2011, Debbie Wasserman-Schulz: House GOP "is almost like a dictatorship" ... "pushing their people to inflict pain and hurt people."
  • Jul 28, 2011, Van Jones: Tea Party putting a "gun to the head of 310 million people"
  • Jul 28, 2011, Paul Krugman: Tea Party has "taken America hostage"
  • Jul 29, 2011, Steve Rattner, former Obama "car czar": Tea Party is "form of economic terrorism. I imagine these Tea Party guys are like strapped with dynamite, standing in the middle of Times Square at rush hour and saying, 'either you do it my way, or we're going to blow you up, ourselves up, and the whole country up with us."
  • Jul 29, 2011, William Yeomans (American U. law professor) in the Politico: Tea Partiers are "full-blown terrorists"
  • Jul 30, 2011, Maureen Dowd (NY Times columnist) calls Tea Partiers "political suicide bombers"
  • Jul 30, 2011, Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) calls GOP "kamikaze pilots"
  • Jul 31, 2011, Margaret Carlson (Bloomberg reporter): Tea Partiers "strapped explosives to the capitol"
  • Aug 1, 2011, Mike Doyle (D-PA): "we negotiated with terrorists" and "This small group of terrorists have made it impossible to spend any money."
same story, Joe Biden: "They have acted like terrorists." (which he later denied saying)
  • Aug 2, 2011, Maureen Dowd: Tea Partiers are "cannibals," "vampires," "zombies," "like the metallic beasts in 'Alien'"
Aug 4, 2011, Chuck Schumer (D-NY), says FAA issue is one of "hostage taking," ... that Republicans are putting "a gun to your head" (complete with hand-gun-to-the-head gesture!)

President Obama, we turn our lonely eyes to you, January 13, 2011:

Quote:
And if, as has been discussed in recent days, their death helps usher in more civility in our public discourse, let us remember it is not because a simple lack of civility caused this tragedy -- it did not -- but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to the challenges of our nation in a way that would make them proud.
So much for that.

A couple of awesome new entries for the "new tone" this week.

First, Obama again calls for civility:

Quote:
"Now, in fairness, since I've been called a socialist who wasn't born in this country, who is destroying America and taking away its freedoms because I passed a health care bill, I'm all for lowering the rhetoric," he said.
Of course, Mr. President. But I guess MSNBC didn't get that memo.

EDIT: And one more I missed from last year:
  • Dec 7, 2010, Obama: "I think it's tempting not to negotiate with the hostage takers, unless the hostage gets harmed."

I'm all for lowering the rhetoric.

Toning down the rhetoric is more political rhetoric.

http://hotair.com/archives/2011/08/1...t-in-michigan/

It will continue to worsen. What is disappointing is that the perpetrators continue to argue for the morally high ground, while actually being the perpetrators of the harsh rhetoric.

IOW, when the rhetoric works, such as Republicans wish to ruin Medicare, the Dems are all for it.

What is really happening is more and more voters are tuning out the politicians. This is dangerous because it makes us less informed, but what options do we have?

We can listen to meaningless drivel and insults which provide no analysis, or we can tune it out. The more difficult route of paying attention while tuning out the BS will be done by fewer and fewer persons. I admit, I don't pay attention as much as I did decades ago. The political discussion grinds one down.

A nice new one today:
  • Andre Carson (D-IN), member of Congressional Black Caucus: "some of them in Congress right now of this tea party movement would love to see you and me ... hanging on a tree"

EDIT: Heh, there's even video:

It's impossible to get past the irony of Tex posting comments complaining about the tone in DC.

  • Jimmy Hoffa, Jr., Teamsters General President, on the Tea Party: "President Obama, this is your army. ... lets take these sons-of-bitches out ..."

The President, who spoke at the same podium 20 minutes later, said he was "proud" of Hoffa. The White House refused further comment, but Obama did have this to say back in February:

Quote:
At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized, at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all the ails of the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do, it’s important for us to pause for a moment, make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds.
EDIT: Jonah Goldberg perfectly nails this "bonfire of asininity" and mirrors my feelings on the "new tone" as well as capturing the purpose of this thread ... which, by the way, appears to have flown right over Cali Coug's sizeable hotair-balloon-sized head.

Heh.

Quote:
We are in a really weird place where the head of the teamsters can't talk tough! I guess ex-cons are the only ones left who can still talk like men every now and then.

We would not be in this mess, we would not have this controversy, if we did not have this bonfire of asininity that came out of the Tucson shootings where all of a sudden Sarah Palin’s Facebook Congressional map was somehow to blame for not only this madman but for all of the violence overtaking America. And for all I know, listening to some of these people on MSNBC, it was responsible for Lee Harvey Oswald.

I mean, it was this absolutely bizarre standard that was established that Barack Obama picked up. He created this standard for themselves where any martial metaphor, any tough language like this, was automatically by their own words and their own standards set up to be inciting violence and what not.

And now it's blowing up in their faces (if I'm allowed to say that), and they deserve it!

Wait- this thread has a point other than Tex couldn't wait to share his collection of stupid quotes that he spent way too long finding?

Let me guess... the point is that it's all Obama's fault. You could have saved yourself the effort and just said the conclusion you were going to arrive at anyways.

  • Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today: A vote for a bill that prohibits federal funding of abortion is a vote to "say that women can die on the floor"

Nancy Pelosi. Leading the Democrat party in showing that "only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to the challenges of our nation."

No threadjacking!

Meanwhile, today's entry comes from our sitting Vice President:
  • Joe Biden, on Republicans who oppose Obama's "jobs" bill: "I wish they had some notion what it’s like to be on the other side of a gun or a 200-pound man standing over you telling you to submit."

In case you're missing the context, he's wishing his political opponents had some idea of what it is like to be robbed and raped. Because of course, if they did, they'd pass Obama's bill.

Remember: Obama is "all for lowering the rhetoric."

EDIT: Audio only on Youtube, here:
