When it comes to sports
Football is the main course, other games are just appetizers. July is by far the worst month for sports. Baseball gets old and it's hard to get interested until the playoffs are near, NBA has the usual free agent/trade drama, but most fans are burned out after a two-month postseason. There is rarely good news in July when it comes to college football. If you're hearing about a team in July, it's usually because a player got into trouble.
August is when it starts to get interesting again. Summer camp begins and interest starts to build. Waiting for the first game is pure torment. You catch a few pre-season NFL games to get in the mindset, but it's not the same. When the game finally rolls around it's near magical when you see the players you've been reading about finally suited up, especially when they come back bigger, stronger and faster. I can't wait for the summer to end so we can start watching football again. |

July is when a lot of the preseason rankings start coming out, so that's fun.
I hate baseball. I saw on SportsCenter they said a game the other day went 17 innings. That's like purgatory. |

July is the BEST month, as that is when the Tour De France is run. The tour is like 21 superbowls in a row. It is, indeed, the Grand Boucle. I look forward to football as much as the next guy, and I am very glad there is virtually no overlap at all with the Tour.

I really don't have anything against the sport, but all the drama prevents this casual fan from becoming more interested. I really don't care what an athlete puts into his/her body. But when all the analysis is focused on the medicine cabinet, it turns away potential fans. My statement was intended to be an indictment against the media love of controversy as opposed to an indictment against the sport.

That's a fair point. It is my impression that many sports writers here really don't understand bike racing, especially without a cancer survivor to write about, so when the turn to bike racing, they do focus on drugs because that is something they do understand.

I somewhat agree about July and professional sports, although the Tour de France and Wimbledom are a nice distration for some of us. |
