Oklahoma went 0-11 in 2005
well now they have. I guess thats what happens when you break the rules. Couldnt have happened to a better program.

unfortunately they wont be 0 - 11, what they are being told to do is vacate the record. So act like the games never happened. Stoops has to take all the games off his w-l record.
the bigger thing may be that they will be on probation till 2010 |

This is silly. The NCAA is trying to whitewash history. They could have cut a significant amount scholarships or restricted bowl play, but they decided to mete out a meaningless punishment. Stupid.

Hey, if it means we no longer lost to USC 55-19, I'll take it.
Seriously, though, Y is correct. If you know anything about Oklahoma's history with NCAA sanctions, this is chump change. On the other hand, just to be safe I think I'll avoid calling my parents for a few days. I can hear my mother now (in her best whiny indignant fan voice): "But we cut the players from the TEAM...We reported the violations OURSELVES...How could they DO this to us???" |

I don't know what the NCAA's intention is here...but if it is to hurt the program, these "major sanctions," don't qualify. Nothing against our Sooner friends here...but when you're talking sanctions...two scholarships for two years doesn't seem like that much of a price to pay.

So, OU is appealing the vacation of wins, but not the other sanctions. The official record is now 0-4, not 0-11. First winless season since 1895.
From Boren: "Above all, we do not believe that erasing the 2005 season from the record books is fair to the over 100 student athletes and coaches who played by the rules and worked their hearts out for a successful season that year,” said OU president David Boren." This is the same guy who wanted a certain game last year vacated from the record books because he didn't like the final score. What basically happened was the NCAA upheld the sanctions OU had already imposed against itself and extended them. OU had dropped the two scholarships and one recruiting coach; NCAA accepted those and made them official. The real danger here (for the Sooners), as one of you pointed out, is that the probation is extended through 2011. If you know the Sooners, we have a violation about every other year. (This year's involved an illegal substance...there hasn't even been a hearing on that one yet.) So it's not unlikely for the Sooners to find themselves in repeat offender territory and with the possibility of serious sanctions similar to those imposed in the late 80s, which led to the erosion of the team in the 1990s. But, obviously, this is just some kind of wrist-slap warning. I guess the NCAA is just saying, "Clean up your act, Stoops. We're watching you." |
