Default Highway safety

Before the holiday started, I posted on my FB status that you are more than six times more likely to die on 2-lane highways as compared to interstates, to be careful driving.

Unfortunately, an acquaintance on my FB friends list died on a rural 2-lane highway during the holidays. Hit head-on by a partially clothed 18 year old, who also died. He leaves behind his wife, hurt in the accident, and a toddler, who thankfully was not with parents while they were traveling.

If you have a choice, lean towards choosing the safer way.

My ex's father likes to take the "shortcut" to Lake Powell over that winding two lane highway (with my kids). There is, of course, an Interstate readily available. To make matters worse, he likes to do it late at night when all the huge tractor trailers are hauling ass. Nothing I can do about it. I suppose this may be one reason I'm not the greatest fan of Powell.

I looked on the map at the highway they died on. It was reported that they were going to Dallas. I don't know where they started, but it was probably San Antonio. I'm guessing that they were cutting across to I-35. Just a guess. I've taken such shortcuts hundreds of times without incident. But it is much more dangerous, though the danger level is arguably still pretty low.

Some places like College Station, cannot be driven to from the north, without going on a 2-lane highway at some point.

Nevada has several death-trap type two-lane roads. From Ely to Elko requires driving one, which has led to the death of at least one physician I know.
