Default Question about blitzing

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I grew up overseas and never had any access to organized football before college.

If a defense uses a 3-4 scheme, and rushes all three down lineman and one linebacker, is this a blitz? What about just rushing the 4 down lineman in a 4-3 scheme?

Is a blitz defined as sending more people than there are down lineman? Or just more than 4 players? Or just someone who isnt a down lineman?

All that it takes to blitz is for at least one linebacker or DB, who normally remains behind the line of scrimmage during a play, to instead be sent across the line. It is most common to see a linebacker blitz as opposed to a safety or corner. Technically, sending a DB across the line would be considered a blitz, but seeing as how it leaves a WR uncovered, don't put it past Bronconi to try it someday. I mean, the dude goes for it on fourth down when the ball is on his own 34.

In my experience in a 3-4 bringing a standing line backer is a blitz, if he comes to the line and plays down (which happens in the formation) that is not a blitz.

If the Defensive player is standing and attempts to cross the line, more than likely that's a blitz.

Dude, what are you talking about? The last few years we ran a 3-3-5. We blitzed DBs all the time. What do you mean try it someday?

I was wondering the same thing. Teams everywhere in college and pro bring DBs on blitzes all the time.

Sorry, I thought the TIC was too obvious to necessitate actually typing it. (Someday I'll realize that the rest of the world doesn't instantly follow my train of thought - women especially).
