My question is why has true Islam been hijacked (bad pun, I know) by these extreme elements? You never, for example, hear of a Buddhist or a Mormon blowing himself up in a subway. So what is it about Islam that has allowed this phenomenon? Is it merely the unstable geo-political environment? Or is it something inherent in the beliefs?

Not quite. I've done a lot of study on them and they were more apocalyptic Christian than Buddhist. In typical Japanese fashion, they muddled everything together until they had brainwashed followers drinking the used bathwater of Mr. I-don't-need-no-steenkin'-razor.

well it mostly expresses powerlessness/helpnlessness. you wouldnot blow yourself up /commit a suicid act if you have enough power and strengh to fight in the battlefield ,would you?

here comes an idealogy in hindu which i found interesting to share
"Hinduism does not advise peace in the face of evil and injustice .The Aryan gods of the Vedic times were all warriors. Hindus also believe that if a person dies while waging a war in the defense of his country, he would attain the heaven of the warriors (viraswargam), a belief which often proved suicidal for many Rajput warriors and their rulers in medieval India when they came into conflict with the Muslim invaders"

i have no idea whether hindu guys are a keen in roadside bombs or not though.
and you wont catch me approve that.
